Winter Walks: The Cabinet of Public Disorder
Starting in November, Yves Bondue heads back into the dark months for a new series of Winter Walks. Now in its 23rd edition, these walks are officially older than many of the carports, veranda extensions, and poorly planned additions that will be discussed along the way.
This year, we’re shining our flashlight on a phenomenon every Fleming knows but rarely dares to name: the unstoppable urge to quickly build something extra.
The Cabinet of Public Disorder
Our Westhoek is a beautiful part of the world. And yet many a back corner looks suspiciously like the training ground of a psychotic DIY contractor with ADHD. Nothing wrong with that as such; the Fleming simply does what his DNA can’t help doing. Even if, since time immemorial, it has produced ribbon development and colourful scenes of verandas, back kitchens, laundry sheds, garden houses and bike shacks, with pigeon lofts and potato cellars nailed onto them. These days they’re gradually being upgraded into resorts with home-built carports, gabion parapets and Collstrop constructions.
In this umpteenth edition of the traditional winter walks, Yves Bondue tells us about the building frenzy of Bertje van de Brulooze and his new carport. About the solar panels on Father Lemire’s sacristy. About a new branch of Mario and Gina’s hair salon: Margikap extended. About the gas-powered wind turbine of Georges van het Sanitair. And about much, much more…
All of it served, as ever, with a handful of songs, accordion music and a warming drink along the way!
Afterwards we warm up toes, hands and other body parts again at ‘Nouter Bar, where a hearty meal awaits. Because walking is great, but walking followed by food remains a golden concept.
