For Rooted: Manen Opzij, ‘Nouter Club brings together four musicians who each play with folk and traditional music in their own unique way. Two from the Flemish folk scene, Thomas Hoste (hurdy-gurdy) and Maarten Marchau (traverso & bagpipes), and two artists from other musical worlds, Colin H. Van Eeckhout (vocals) and Simon Segers (percussion), create a performance inspired by the old legend of Malegys from the Dranouter region.
The story of Malegys serves as the starting point: themes such as the position of women and discrimination are reimagined for today through music and improvisation, while traditional melodies and instruments remain at the core. The result is a concentrated musical conversation between folklore and new soundscapes, where tradition and experimentation meet.
Rooted is an umbrella project by Muziekcentrum Dranouter (now: ‘Nouter Club): productions that have their roots in traditional music but continue to develop artistically, each in their own way.
