Benauwd van den Bouwulf

2013 ‘Nouter Club

Benauwd van den Bouwulf brings forgotten children’s songs back to life. A children’s choir and local musicians make them dance, ring out, and come alive in surprising ways. From old notes to living room sounds: Flemish tradition sounds playful and close to home.

More about this project

Children’s songs have formed a rich tradition for centuries: play, comfort, education, and fun are passed down through them from generation to generation. In Benauwd van den Bouwulf, ‘Nouter Club joins forces with vzw De Fietseling (de Kinderbrouwerij) to bring these songs back to life, inspired by Edmond van Coussemaker’s collection Chants Populaires des Flamands de France.

The performance lets children and adults alike rediscover the melodies and lyrics, sung by a 15-piece children’s choir led by Tine de Voghel. Local musicians bring Dries Chaerle’s arrangements to life, making the heritage audible and tangible. Thanks to Erfgoedcel CO7, this family performance is given a local and historical context, with a focus on the beauty and familiarity of the songs and the work of Coussemaker himself.
